"Tips for Writing A Flashback"

Flashbacks are a common way to show the reader a backstory event 'in real time' but they must be used with care. Anytime you take the story from the present to the past, it interrupts the flow.

1. Only use a flashback if it propels the story forward and the backstory is crucial
2. Flashbacks should reveal something important, not explain.
3. Get in and get out-no flab allowed
4. Give it a punch-the even should have a huge impact on the current scene and emotions at work
5. Timing is everything: build up to the reveal and create suspense
